If you want to take a romantic selfie, you have to pose at the Kiss Statue known as “Unconditional Surrender”, back on the seafront of Civitavecchia after a few years of absence. With this work the sculptor Johnny Seward, inspired by the famous photograph “V-J Day in Times Square”, taken on 14 August 1945 in Times Square, wanted to depict the passionate kiss of a sailor and a young nurse, transported by the euphoria of the end of the Second World War. The image, published in Life magazine, went around the world and became the symbol of joy for the rediscovered peace, as evidenced by its actual name: “Embracing Peace”. The colossal sculpture, more than eight meters high, has traveled to different places: San Diego, Sarasota and Key West in Florida, New York, Caen in France, Bastogne in Belgium, and since 2022, after a journey started in Portsmouth, where it was installed, has come here where you can admire it, in the great Piazzale degli Eventi.
