Just outside Civitavecchia, in the locality of Pantano, stands the Church of Saint Mary of Consolation and Parish of Saint Augustine, Bishop and doctor of the Church, which preserves the statue of Our Lady of Civitavecchia became the object of veneration for thousands and thousands of devotees, from the day on 2 February 1995, for 14 days, was seen watering blood, also by the bishop. Public opinion was divided between skeptics and believers and since then numerous studies and analyses have been carried out that have not allowed the Catholic Church to express a definitive opinion on the authenticity of the miracle, even though Pope John Paul II venerated her and placed on her head a precious crown and rosary. The place is still a source of devotion and a pilgrimage destination. The Church is dedicated to bishop Augustine and on the plaque of the bell tower is engraved the translation from the Latin of an inscription of the seventeenth century that tells the encounter between the saint and the angel, an episode taken up in paintings by artists such as Botticelli, Lippi and Rubens.
