The Liburna

Accessible from the outside, visible beyond the fence. We recommend entering the Port from Varco Fortezza (Forte Michelangelo) where there is a ramp to access the descent of the Rocca.

Calata della Rocca, 33

Inside the Roman dock, not far from the Ancient Fortress, in the back of the square in front of the Porta Marina, you can stop for a moment to observe the beautiful reconstruction of the section of an ancient liburna, a type of small galley used for raids and patrols. Its name derives from the fact that it was used by the Liburnians, a tribe of the Illyrians, population of ancient Dalmatia, and later by the Romans. It had a double row of oars, a mast, a sail and the bow bent upwards. Under the bow was a rostrum made to hit enemy ships below the waterline.

The section of the ship, reproduced in full size (scale 1:1), is the work of Mario Palmieri, director of the laboratory of experimental archaeology CANS LANS, for years engaged in the study and reproduction of Roman ships relying on the construction techniques and technologies of the time.
