The large building that you can see right in front of the Traiano Theater is the barracks built by order of Pope Clement XIV in 1774, and completed by Pius VI in 1776, whose coat of arms is recognizable in the west corner. The imposing building, called the Quartierone, housed the papal garrison of about 250 soldiers, the lodgings of the Governor and the officers. In the course of its history and on the occasion of the historical events that involved the city, it found itself occupied several times: by the French troops of Napoleon at the end of 1700, then by the Bourbon Neapolitans and then by the papalines; again by the French from 1849 to 1870, following the events of the Roman Republic of Mazzini and finally the Italian troops commanded by Nino Bixio on 16 September 1870. Oggi è sede della Guardia di Finanza ed è intitolata a Giacinto Bruzzesi, storico colonnello garibaldino dell’impresa dei Mille. More info: quartierone.pdf
