Le biscuttine

Since the end of the 19th century, during the Christmas period it is traditional to prepare “biscuttine“,grated lemon peel, candied orange and cedar, cinnamon and sambuca give the biscuit a sweet, enveloping and spicy taste. The other ingredients are: toasted almonds and hazelnuts, dark chocolate cubes, flour, eggs, sugar, bitter cocoa, yeast and vanilla. At the end it is all mixed with melted butter and baked.
For some years now, historic ovens, once used only by families for cooking biscuits, have increased their production and several supermarkets in the area have begun to distribute them on a larger scale. The City of Civitavecchia works to safeguard the traditional product and for its promotion in December organizes “the Christmas cookie festival of Civitavecchia”.
