Calamatta square

If you cross Porta Livorno heading towards the city center, you will find yourself in Piazza Calamatta where, according to some archaeologists, there was the theatre of the ancient Centumcellae, while, centuries later, it was used as a parade ground by the papal garrisons.
It is dedicated to the great engraver Luigi Calamatta, born in Civitavecchia in 1801 and buried here. The artist, called “genius of the burin”, soon joined the political activity of Italian patriot, “voluntary exile” between Paris and Brussels, to the artistic activity of brilliant translator of the greatest masters of the present and the past. He became famous for the engraving of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” which earned him the gold medal in 1855 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
