To reach Piazza Leandra, the heart of the historic village, the most evocative route starts from the nearby Piazza Aurelio Saffi and passes through the Archetto, the gate of the ancient walls of the ninth century that gives its name to the homonymous district. Leandra Square, the oldest in the city, appears enclosed between noble buildings and simple houses with clothes stretched out at the windows, two churches, a fountain, restaurants and wine bars, crowded for the “nightlife”. On the square you can recognize the monumental and sixteenth-century Palazzo Manzi, inside which, in a private apartment, were found some frescoes attributed to the Raphael school and which are a replica of the paintings of the Room of Eliodoro, in the Vatican, work of Raphael; the Church of San Nicola of the ‘700, now deconsecrated, which preserves the statues of the procession of Good Friday, and the Church of the Star, home of the Archconfraternity of Gonfalone. To embellish the whole, the fountain in the center of the square, of 1639, recently reactivated.
