In 1786 the first permanent theatre of Civitavecchia was inaugurated: it was totally made of wood and with time it was uncomfortable and not very functional.
The new Traiano Theatre, designed by the architect Antonio De Rossi, was named after the founding emperor of the city; it had the horseshoe shape, typical of the time, a large audience, four rows of boxes each of which contained twenty-three and a large gallery that dominated them from above, three entrances and a beautiful oil-painted curtain. With the bombing of 1943, the theatre was destroyed almost completely: only the facade and the adjacent rooms were saved, in addition to the curtain, which was lost after the war. After alternating events and a long period of closure, May 29, 1999 the theater was finally reopened: restored in its neoclassical forms and modernized, currently consists of a rectangular room with a large audience, of a large and low gallery and two side galleries, with a total capacity of 638 seats.
Over the years he has seen Enrico Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Callas and Carla Fracci and Maria Taglioni perform operas and lyrical compositions, conductors such as Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and Donizetti, whose surnames are on the frescoed vault of the main foyer along with other renowned directors and composers.
Even today its rich program offers shows and events ranging from dance to opera, from comedy to musical, with guests and illustrious national and international companies.
